Please note: There are currently no plans to have a 2010 edition of the Colorado Classic 1000. The BMWMCC Club thanks Eric Levy for all his hard work in putting this great event together for the last 3 years.
You’ve reached the event page for the Colorado Classic 1000, our annual long-distance riding event which challenges participants to complete a prescribed 1000+ mile route within 24 hours. Qualified Finishers receive a special commemorative award in recognition of their accomplishment and the opportunity to register for SaddleSore 1000 certification from the Iron Butt Association. The Colorado Classic 1000 is a long-distance tour, not a race, and leads participants along scenic, twisting routes featuring spectacular river canyons, lush alpine forests and high mountain passes that can only be found in the Rocky Mountain region. Freeways are kept to a minimum. Entry is by advance registration only and spots are limited. All bikes are welcome. The 2009 Colorado Classic 1000 was held this past June 20-21. Registration opened in November 2008 and all spots were taken by April. The route started at the Holiday Inn in Lakewood, Colorado, and finished at the Old Town Inn in Crested Butte, Colorado. 65 riders from 12 states left the Start with the goal of completing the challenging 1027-mile route in 24 hours or less. Not an easy task, considering the route mostly covered scenic two-lane roads through the Colorado and New Mexico high country, crossing the Continental Divide at nine locations and climbing mountain passes totaling almost 150,000 feet in elevation. There were two mandatory gas stops, in Hotchkiss, CO and Tierra Amarilla, NM. The weather for the ride was almost perfect, at least for the first part of the day. Comfortable temps and little chance of rain, though by the end of the ride, the skies opened up in what has become typical Colorado Classic 1000 fashion. Ten riders dropped out and failed to finish, but not as a result of accidents or mechanical issues. And for those who insist that BMW final drives are prone to failure and ill-suited for long-distance events, none of the 30 entrants who were riding Paralever-equipped bikes had any problems. Congratulations to all the Finishers on a job well done! The date and finish destination of the 2010 Colorado Classic 1000 has not been finalized. Updates will be posted here as they become available, so please check back with us.
