R1150GSA Final Drive Rebuild 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago

Walked by the Adventure today and noticed a puddle of red fluid on the garage floor. Final Drive rebuild time? In the spirit of getting to know this bike as well as my Husqvarna, I'm considering doing the work myself. Is there anyone out there that has tackled this project and feels they understand the dynamics? I'd be willing to buy the beer and let you offer the advice!
Thanks; Ken Your WALKING Rally Master

I feel your pain. I just spent $425 last week to have a final drive seal replaced. Ouch.

I'll drink some of your beer...and give you some advice... I even have some specialty tools which might come in very handy if you decide to tackle it yourself. Never done one of those. But I'm still trying to figure out why your FD is bleeding RED? Does the rear wheel wobble like the bearing is loose or toast, or might it be just a seal failure?

Thanks for the offer Ken. My concern is I have never been in there before, and while there appears to be no play on the wheel and it is probably just a seal, I wouldn't know what it should look like. So I was hoping to find someone that has had an eyeball on one of these and could educate me as we go. I've checked out the ADV Hall of Wisdom and don't want to go it on my own. Although we can certainly have a beer! http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/Final%20Drive%20R&R.htmlI've set up an appointment with Pete.

Ken,
What was the final "fix" on our rear drive?? Seal? Bearing?

I dodged the bullet this time. It turned out to be a seal. The long term prognosis may not be as good, as there was very fine _meta_l in the FD oil. This may have contributed to the seal failure, now it's time to change the oil more frequently and keep an eye on wheel play.

Good news!!! There has been so much written about final drive failures on the LT's that for a while I worried about my 2000 LT failing on me somewhere inconvient. Then after a while I decided it will do exactly that! In the mean time I plan to just ride the heck out of it until it happens!! Then deal with it. radar
