Accident on Saturday. 3 Months, 1 Week ago
My friend Alex was in an accident Saturday morning just out side of Morrison. I was leading and about 100 yards ahead of Alex when I checked my mirror and saw his bike skidding across the road and hitting the guard rail. I had just gotten out of the first right hand sweeper and Alex had apparently side swiped a small car; hit is low on the driver side door. Alex ended up in the middle of the road and the bike kept going. I got turned around and could see him moving as I came back and I was just thinking 'get up Alex and get out of the road' but he couldn't. Alex broke both of his legs.

His right leg is broken in his upper femur and down low where the tibia enters the ankle, the doctor's said it was pretty much shattered. His left leg is broken with a compound fracture about mid calf and both bones are broken. They will insert rods in both the femur and his left tibia. The ankle will have to be put into some type of appliance that will pull the ankle away from the bone end and then they will operate on it in 7-10 days after the swelling has subsided. He went into surgery last night about 5 and it was expected to last about 4 hours.

Alex suffered only minor upper body injuries slight abrasion on his left arm. His head did not seem to hit the pavement as his helmet shows no marks what so ever. All he can remember is setting up to enter the turn and then being on the ground.

Alex is a newer member of the club and has been to a couple of Saturday morning breakfasts. He is in St. Anthony Central hospital and currently in room 3206. Alex is a strong Christian so any prayers will be greatly appreciated.

Ride safe.

Thanks,

Milton S.

Thank you all for your thoughts. Alex's last name is Chernushin and he was (as of Sunday night) in room 3206 of the IMU in St. Anthony Central hospital; visitation is anytime except 2:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. He rode a 2004(?) K1200RS medium blue in color. He had just joined the club in mid to late spring a had only been to a couple of breakfasts and rides. I will be visiting again today (Monday) from about 4-5:30.

Again, thank you all for your kind thoughts.

Milton,

Please pass along my thoughts and prayers to Alex. The entire incident must have been frightening for you both. And keep us posted on his progress.

I know how he feels... July of '99, I hit a truck head on and suffered serious leg injuries. I was choppered to St. Anthony's Hospital, where I underwent surgery after surgery. Quite a few years and quite a bit of hardware, and I am good as new. He's in good hands there, but it'll be a character challenge to pull through unscathed.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do, as we're already pulling for him!

Re:Accident on Saturday. 1 Month ago
Sorry that I have not given an update on Alex's condition. He is finally home and able to get around on crutches. He was able to attend church last Sunday for the first time since the accident.

Alex was in hospital for 3 continuous weeks. When they finally sent him home he developed a bad infection in his smashed right ankle. So the 5th week after the accident he was back in hospital for 3-4 more days as they opened his ankle back up to clean out the infection. The doctors decided to leave the ankle wound open and placed some type of vacuum device on the wound to suck his juices through the ankle to help expel the infection. He was also put on some super duty antibiotics, one of which had to be injected into a catheter that had been threaded into some major vein/artery near his heart. Alex expects to be back at work sometime in mid November.

The sad thing is that Alex does not want to ride motorcycles ever again, but that is a personal decision.

Thanks for asking.
