a GS ride and The Thomte Twist 1 Month, 4 Weeks ago

A couple of weeks ago Carl led several of us on a fun GS ride. We took a dirt road turn off on the Mount Evans road that ends up at the hot springs in Idaho Springs. Up over Oh My God road into Central City. Then past the cemetery to Apex road and eventually to Rollins pass road. We went up towards the pass until we encountered an impassible snow drift. Carl's interest and knowledge of the history of Colorado provided great commentary along the way.
When we came back down Rollins Pass road to the peak-to-peak Carl was off like a shot. In an attempt to catch him I received a performance award from Gilpin County Deputy Stanton. Officer Stanton and I first met last November. He didn't recognize me (I didn't dare take me helmet off) but unfortunately his computer refreshed his memory. So much for leniency. It was during this part of the ride that I witnessed first hand what will henceforth be known to me as the "Thomte Twist". During one of our earlier stops the issue of radar was discussed. Carl shared a maneuver he uses to avoid tickets. I think this is a patented move that can only be revealed by Carl. I will tell you that he was in front of the group, was speeding and he rode away unscathed. Carl executed his move smoother and faster than Superman changes into his costume. He faded into the traffic like a cameleon in the rain forest. I was definitely in the presence of a master.
We went back to Black Hawk for lunch and splurged for the $2.99 prime rib special. Carl put a positive spin on the end of our ride by treating me to lunch. Something about feeling responsible for the ticket as the ride leader.
We had a fun day and saw some new sites. There was conversation about having a monthly GS ride. It was a great change of pace from the asphalt. I for one am up for more of these rides . . sans Officer Stanton. Come join us!
